Introduction to the School of Education Science
The School of Education Science at Chongqing Normal University (CNU) has a long history of over a century, which can be traced back to the founding of the Second Women’s Normal School of Sichuan Province in 1914. The newly established school was merged from the previous School of Education Science, Chongqing Special Education College and Chongqing Pre-school Education College as well as part of faculty and students from the School of Film and Television Media and School of Primary Education. Currently it is the largest school within the university.
There are 147 full-time faculty, among which 62% have senior professional titles, 60% have doctoral degrees, 7 enjoy the State Council special allowance. The school has build a highly competent and dedicative faculty team, including several national awardees: Advanced Worker for National Special Education-Professor Zhang Wenjing, who is the university’s pionner in special education; National Excellent Teacher-Professor Zhang Xixi and Professor Shen Renhong; National Model Teacher- Professor Du Ping; National the Most Beautiful Teacher and National Model of Self-Support-Professor Zheng Xuan, who is China’s first self-trained PhD with hearing disability. In addition, the school has 3 Chongqing Famous Teacher Award winners, 7 Chongqing talent project candidates in various categories, 13 provincial-level academic leaders, 21 experts selected for philosophy and social science talent tank of Chongqing. There’re currently 809 postgraduate students and 1,890 undergraduate students.
The school has 3 municipal key disciplines, 6 undergraduate majors, 2 first-level discipline master programs and 2 professional master degree programs; 2 provincial and ministerial-level research bases for humanities and social sciences; 1 provincial and ministerial-level key laboratory. It also has 1 provincial and ministerial-level discipline specialty group, 3 provincial and ministerial-level distinctive specialties, 2 municipal first-class specialty, 2 national quality courses, 5 provincial and ministerial-level quality courses, 4 nationally-planned textbook, 3 provincial and ministerial-level planned textbooks; 1 provincial and ministerial-level innovation team; 2 provincial and ministerial-level research and training base. The school has successively undertaken national training for pre-school education, special education and mental health education in primary and secondary school. It also provides core teacher training programs on provincial and ministerial level. In addition, the school hosts CNU Research Base for Pre-school Education and CNU Children's Literature Research Institute of Western China.
The school is committed to promoting its performance and has made great achievements: The department of special education founded and developed the experimental school for special children, the only one of such kind at national level created by the scientific research personnels of a university. It has set up the only one municipal Key Laboratory for Special Children's Psychological Diagnosis and Education Technology. The department of pedagogy has established and developed Chongqing curriculum and teaching research base, while the department of pre-school education has trained more than 90% of the heads of demonstration kindergartens in Chongqing. The school has been approved of a national outstanding teacher training program, 2 faculty team construction demonstration projects under the Ministry of Education, 1 municipal key project for faculty team construction, 5 national and provincial teacher training bases, 3 distinctive provincial-and-ministerial-level majors, 3 provincial-and-ministerial-level teaching teams, 2 provincial-and-ministerial-level experimental sites for talent training innovation, 1 major as pilot major for comprehensive reform led by Chongqing Education Commission, 1 major as pilot major for transformation of special talents cultivation in Chongqing, 2 institutional pilot projects for reforming the cultivation mode of excellent undergraduates. Besides, the school has achieved fruitful teaching results, winning 1 Second Prize of National Teaching Achievement Award, as well as 3 first prizes, 2 second prizes and 5 third prizes of Chongqing Municipal Teaching Achievement Award. Among the teaching and research reform projects that the faculty members have been granted, there are 7 major projects, 11 key projects and 10 general projects at municipal level, as well as many university-level educational reform projects.
The school has won many honors, including the national advanced unit in education system, national demonstration base of volunteer service for the disabled, national post of female labor model, the gold winner of Challenge-cup National Startup Business Plan Contest, the first, second and third prize in national teaching contest of education master, advanced group of Party construction, organization award of student innovative teaching contest, gold prize of female student category in university’s sports meeting, gold prize of female category in “Three-Excellence Cup” basketball contest.
